Orthokeratology in Houston, TX
Orthokeratology (or Ortho-K) is a process of gently reshaping the cornea by wearing a specially shaped contact lens while asleep to be able to see without correction (glasses or contact lenses) while awake. Imagine the joy of waking up, seeing well without any corrective lenses and not having to wear a correction the rest of the day!

An FDA approved procedure, Ortho-K has been in clinical use for over 40 years and has been shown to be a safe alternative to refractive surgery for most patients. A keen proponent of holistic approach to eye care and eye health, Dr. Kotecha actively seeks ways to reduce or minimize progression of myopia at any age but especially in children and young adults.

Dr. Kotecha, a member of the American Academy of Orthokeratology & Myopia Control is proud to offer Ortho-K to patients in the Houston area.

Indications for Orthokeratology
Ortho-K is an option for the possible control of progression of myopia, or near-sightedness, in children or adults where the degree of myopia is either low to moderately high or where the myopia is changing rapidly. Current world-wide data shows an alarming increase in myopia in the overall patient population and especially in children and in young adults. Though many reasons are theorized, the current world-wide myopia “epidemic” presents a significant challenge to practitioners and patients alike in many ways. Many patients and practitioners have had some success in slowing down the progression of myopia through Ortho-K.

Like any other contact lens wear modality, overnight contact lens wear should only be undertaken after a thorough discussion with the eye doctor, and good personal hygiene and periodic follow-up care is necessary. While results will depend on a multitude of clinical and other factors, team-work between the patient and the doctor ultimately helps towards achieving success and joy in seeing without correction while awake.

Ortho-K is also be a great non-surgical solution for patients who are not good candidates for surgical refractive procedures or patients who choose not to have refractive surgery but yet would like to be able to see without glasses or active contact lenses.

What to Expect / Planning for your Exam
As part of your contact lens evaluation, you will undergo a comprehensive eye examination. You will have the option of getting your eyes dilated on the day of your visit, a future visit or to decline dilation as an included procedure entirely. It is highly recommended that your eyes be dilated to allow for a more thorough evaluation of the back of the eye. You should not drive for at least 4 or 5 hours after getting your eyes dilated, although we can always reschedule the dilation part of the examination to a more suitable time if that is what you wish. However, we highly recommend bringing a designated driver and getting your eyes dilated the same day.

Additional testing will be performed to evaluate the cornea. Depending upon the prescription and complexity, some patients may be able to walk out with a trial or final pair of contact lenses after the examination, whereas some will need their lenses ordered. Either way, a schedule of future visit(s) for follow-up care will be discussed depending on the complexity and modality of contact lens wear chosen.

The world is definitely worth seeing well – have your eyes checked at least yearly, or as advised by your physician!
