Eyeglasses and The Matrix

As an optician, I often get requests from patients to help them find a “different” frame. Since we have an eclectic frame selection, I always look forward to doing this. One of the more interesting challenges though, is when a patient seems to like the way a frame looks on him or her but is hesitant because it “just doesn’t look like me”.

Way back in 1999, the Wachowskis changed pop culture forever by introducing us to The Matrix. It led us to concepts like “bullet time” and the famous “a glitch in the Matrix”. But, one other thing it introduced us to was the concept of residual self-image.

In the Matrix, residual self image was “the mental projection of your digital self”. But, if we expand that definition a bit, it is just the way you are used to seeing yourself. It very much applies to eyeglasses. We get used to the way we look in our current glasses and are loath to change it.

But, if we persuade ourselves to go ahead and purchase the new glasses, something almost magical happens. We wear them for a couple of weeks and then try on our old glasses for some reason. However, those old glasses just don’t look like us anymore. We have a new residual self image!

So, don’t let “it just doesn’t look like me” stop you. If you like the way you look in the glasses, consider it the new version of you and realize you will quickly get used to it. Don’t let the old you stand in the way of the new, upgraded you! Don’t settle for the blue pill!

Bifocal Lenses, Progressive Addition Lens design

While finding a fashionable frame is important, let’s talk about the lenses for a while. Especially progressive lenses. Over the last fifteen years or so, progressives have undergone an absolute revolution. Earlier this century (sounds like a long time but it really isn’t) the bifocal part of a progressive lens was molded on the front of the lens in kind of a one-size-fits-all system, then the actual distance RX would be ground into the back of the lens blank. It would then be edged to fit the frame. It worked fairly well for a lot of people. But, it wasn’t exactly customizable.

Now, we can fully customize the lens for you and the frame you pick. We take into account how far the lens is from your eye, the tilt of the frame, how much the frame wraps around your face, even your lifestyle. Plus, the lens design has improved by leaps and bounds, giving much wider reading and intermediate vision corridors with a corresponding decrease in the distortion on the edges of the lenses.

Unfortunately, the old style lenses are still available. Most of the lens manufacturers would love to discontinue them but the discount retailers need them to survive. Are they the best lenses for the patient? Well, no. But, they are cheap!

We at The Eye Glassiers in Houston only sell the best digitally designed lenses we can find. Yes, it takes a bit more time to take all the measurements needed. Yes, you need to answer a few questions about what kind of work you do and hobbies you have, etc. But, your vision is important to us. We want to make it as clear and comfortable as possible.

It’s the difference between “They’re ok..” and “I absolutely love these glasses!” We strive for the latter.
